Chapter 12

Carter was a breath of fresh air. Two days after they met, October received a text from Carter asking if she was busy. When she replied no, he followed up with his promised phone call. They talked on the phone for over five hours before realizing that it was way past their bedtimes. They agreed to meet up, and go out to the movies and out to eat that weekend.

Getting together and going out was the best idea that they decided on together. They spent so much time together and had so much fun. There was definitely a spark between the two of them. Carter and October definitely had chemistry. October realized that they were complete opposites, but they were good for each other. Like they say, opposites attract. During their time together, they learned a lot about each other, but not really much. It was weird, but typical for a first date. They learned a few of each other’s likes and dislikes, but nothing too personal. In fact, Carter did not seem too interested in sharing too much of his personal business. October did not like that about him, the fact that he was a bit mysterious, and it made her feel determined to find out more about him.

The two of them were sitting in Logan's Roadhouse enjoying their steaks, when October decided to try and fish some information out of Carter. While they were talking on the phone the other night, Carter had mentioned leaving school in the middle of the semester to come back home. Carter was attending McNeese in Lake Charles, Louisiana. He enjoyed attending McNeese and he was a player on their football team, so October knew that it had to be something of importance to make him want to leave. He changed the subject before October could get the reason why and she was trying to see what information she could pull from him today.

“Well, I had to take a break for a little while. Something unexpected had come up. I don't think I will be ready to return until next fall,” Carter explained. He seemed a bit uncomfortable with the topic and October caught him sneaking glances around the restaurant. He did this quite a few times since they arrived at the restaurant. October took notice.

“How come? You're not in any trouble, are you?” October had to ask.

“Trouble? Nah, not really. Just a few things I needed to take care of. Nothing you should worry your pretty little head over.”

“I hope not. I mean, if you are in trouble, you could talk to me about it. You don't have to worry about me overreacting, or being worried, or telling your business. I'm a big girl. I can handle a little trouble. Just as long as it is only a little trouble.” October reassured him. She also thought to herself that whatever he was running from there or running to here couldn’t be as bad as or worse than the things that she was dealing with from her friends.
